Home Changes… and So Do We

Home Changes… and So Do We

I’ve always believed that our homes tell our stories.

Not because they’re perfectly decorated or filled with expensive furniture, but because they quietly collect the chapters of our lives. If you pay attention, every room has something to say.

Home is one of the few things that is always changing.

As children, we dream about leaving it. Then one day we pack our bags and create one of our own. We fill spare bedrooms with cribs, then bunk beds, then teenagers who somehow take over every square inch of the house. We squeeze a few more chairs around the table because someone fell in love, someone got married, and little feet arrived.

Sometimes we need more space, so we move up. Years later, those same bedrooms sit empty, and we wonder if perhaps less house might actually mean more life. We downsize, simplify, and carry only what matters most.

Life welcomes new babies into our homes, and eventually it asks us to say goodbye to the people we love. There are seasons of loud laughter and seasons of quiet halls. There are celebrations, heartbreaks, renovations, and fresh starts.

The only thing that truly stays the same is that everything eventually changes.

Recently, I had the privilege of painting and redecorating a beautiful family home. We refreshed the walls, styled the cabinets, and tucked new life into every nook. There were gorgeous new additions—a stunning custom walnut mantel handcrafted by Windsor Plywood, beautiful furnishings, and thoughtful finishing touches that made the home feel current while honouring its roots.

But my favourite pieces weren’t the new ones.

They were the ones that had earned their place.

A moose antler found in a field.

An original auction poster from a grandfather’s farm sale.

A commissioned painting that captured the remains of the family’s original homestead.

Artifacts gathered over generations from land that is still being farmed today.

None of those items could be purchased in a store. Their value wasn’t measured in dollars—it was measured in memories.

Those are the pieces that stop you in your tracks.

They remind us where we’ve come from, who built the life we’re living today, and why home has never really been about the walls around us. It’s about the stories we choose to carry forward.

As a decorator, I love creating beautiful spaces. I love fresh paint, thoughtful colour palettes, and finding the perfect place for every piece. But my favourite part of any project is discovering what already belongs there.

Because decorating isn’t about erasing a family’s history.

It’s about making room for the next chapter while honouring every chapter that came before.

Your home doesn’t need to look like a magazine. It should look like you.

Filled with collected treasures, meaningful memories, and reminders of the people who made you who you are.

Because one day, someone else will walk through your home, pause in front of a weathered keepsake or a framed photograph, and ask, “What’s the story behind that?”

And that story will become part of the home, too.
